A Bread Sculpture Fit For a King

When I saw that this was the famous “Lion Bread” episode, I knew I was going to have to do something that was rather spectacular. Or at least a bit showy. Then the details: 3 types of bread (flavors), one of them stuffed, and 3D. Now, first I thought maybe it would be fun to do something Northwest themed…like an orca…you know, the “killer whale”…but finding a good black bread recipe is tricky. They’re all mostly just very dark brown, at best and a brown orca doesn’t look right. So…what else?

Well, I then struck on the idea of a crown, with some kind of ornamentation on a stuffed pillow.

I have ideas like cranberry Chelsea buns for the pillow…but I also think I could go something simple like cinnamon rolls for the pillow base. Then a yellow saffron bread for the crown, and maybe a pain de campagne to make an orb…how do I include a cross on top? Breadsticks? I’ll have to think on it.

Of course, I don’t have the time or organization to do it all in a day, so I’m going to do this in stages and eat it as we go–I don’t think I’ll be able to do all of them and stack them for a picture…maybe I can photoshop something together. 🙂

So today, I finally got to start the cinnamon rolls. I am using the recipe from Tasty found here, which they recently did a video that included a step-by-step guide.

After the first rise…nice and floofy but very wet. I may have mis-measured the flour because it took a lot more than 1/2 cup to get it ready to work for 10 minutes without being a sticky, globby mess.
Nice rectangle…could have squared up the corners a bit better. Didn’t photograph spreading the buttery cinnamon stuff on there, but you put blobs on and then spread it around.
Cinnamon roll-up
I used the dough scraper to cut them into rounds, but it squashed them down a bit. They fluffed back up just fine.
16 rolls don’t fit well into a 9 x 13 pan
With cream cheese frosting (personally, I’ll go with regular frosting next time…)
